| VHF contesting has been one of the most fun and adventurous
parts of ham radio. I've been quite a few places and operated quite a
few different ways for the various VHF contests. Some of those ways
include (but not limited to): Amtrak Mobile Rover, [standard] Rover,
Maritime Rover, Mountain Top (Mt. Washington, NH). from different
locations. When I was Roving in the car, I usually started from home in
the Gaithersburg Area, would travel north into Pennsylvannia, east
along the bottom of the state, exit around Wilmington, Delaware; then
down along the (Atlantic) coast untill Virgina Beach, VA, back up I-95
toward Washington, DC and then back home. On other occasions I would go
to Skyline Drive, in Virgina (near Luray) and operator there. Other
locations include: Mount Washington, NH (home of the USA worst
weather), Ocean City, Assategue Island, Cheaspeake Bay (between
Annapolis and Kent Island, just south of the Bay Bridge; and many more
places.
The contests
happen three times a year and are sponsored by the ARRL. Additionally
there are other contests that are simular, sponsored by other, held at
different times, but so far, all the contests mentioned herein will be
either the January, June, or September VHF contests by the ARRL.
